HOW TO REACH SHILLONG, MEGHALAYA

***FLIGHT TO GUWAHATI***

The capital city of Meghalaya i.e. Shillong has an airport but the flights are pretty expensive whereas you can easily find a flight for around Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 from New Delhi to Guwahati.

***TRAIN TO GUWAHATI***

FROM GUWAHATI TO SHILLONG

DISTANCE: 99.6 Km

TIME- 2.5 hours due to the traffic at the outskirts of Shillong

1.BUSES OF MEGHALAYA STATE GOVERNMENT:

  • Departure time from Shillong : 6.30 a.m & 9.00 a.m
  • Departure time from Guwahati Airport : 2.00 p.m & 4.00 p.m
  • Fare : Rs.250/- per person
  • Tickets will be available at Tourist Information Centre, Police Bazaar and Meghalaya Tourism Information Centre, Guwahati Airport.

2.SHARED CAB: From the airport itself you can take a cab to the city of Shillong. Shared cabs are available all around the day. There are two options available in shared cabs:-

# TATA SUMO:  10 people + Driver

Charges: Rs 75 to Rs 150/- per person

# SEDAN OR HATCH BACK CAR: Four people + Driver

Note: Cabs are completely safe, I myself traveled all alone in the shared cab

Charges: Rs 400/- to Rs 500/- per person (Drop at Police Bazaar, Shillong)

Note: In shared taxi you have to wait till the number of seats in the taxi is filled. Sometimes you have to wait for an hour or so too. So, be ready for waiting.

3. PERSONAL CAB : Hatchback or Sedan car like that of Swift, Swift desire or Toyota Itios

Charges- Rs 1500/- (You got to bargain they might even quote Rs.2800/-)

ABOUT SHILLONG: The city of Shillong is surrounded by beautiful hills which are covered with sky touching pine-oak trees. If you move towards upper Shillong, you will love the view as the houses there are on a hill overlooking the valley. The weather is always pleasant which gives a melody of happiness to one’s mood. It’s like you hop up and down while walking the cute little streets of Shillong.

I. POLICE BAZAAR

HOW TO REACH POLICE BAZAAR: Take a shared cab which will cost just Rs. 10/- per person. Tell them that you want to take a shared cab, not a full-fledged cab.

It is the main bazaar of Shillong. In the chaos of this market, you can do some really amazing stuff!

# EAT FRESH FRUITS: The natives of this place pluck fresh STRAWBERRIES, GRAPES, CRANBERRY, RED BERRIES, ETC and sell them in police bazaar. Buy and eat these refreshing treats for sure!

# CHICKEN & PORK WITH SALAD: Pork is what the Khalsi tribals (the natives are known as Khalsi Tribals) swear by. If you love Pork chops go ahead and enjoy them!

II. UMIAM LAKE (must visit)

Distance and Direction: The lake is 15 km away from the city of Shillong and comes on the way while you are going to or coming from Guwahati.

About: Feel the peace amidst clean water, sky touching trees and the hills which almost give you a feeling as if you have landed in a jungle. The silence in and around this lake is worth the feel.

THINGS TO DO AT UMIAM LAKE

~BOATING

If you are traveling alone or the number of people are less then you need to find a group with whom you can pool in to buy a boat ride. They don’t charge per person instead they charge for the entire boat. Instead, go for the water scooter- Charges Rs.500/-

~CARRY FOOD WITH YOU AND GET ON TO PICNIC MODE

~ WALK DOWN THE ROAD ALONG THE LAKE: As you enter the lake on the right side there runs along a long road with the lake. The road has small bridges, cute huts and tree houses. The view from these tree houses should not be given a miss.


III. ELEPHANT FALLS (Visit if you love nature and enjoy natural falls)

HOW TO REACH ELEPHANT FALLS?

The place has one of the most beautiful waterfalls. This is 12 Km away from Shillong towards Cheerapunji, Dawki and Mawlynnong.

Travel Duration: 30 minutes from Police Bazaar, Shillong

Time Spent: 1-1.5 hours

IV. SHILLONG PEAK (Visit for sure)

It is from this peak that you get to see the valley of Shillong.

V. CAPT. WILLIAMSON SANGMA STATE MUSEUM

VI. WALDES LAKE

You can easily take a walk to this lake either in the morning or in the evening. It is a small lake in the city. Can be given a miss if you are to short of time. But, we have time to visit this cute little lake.

FOODIE STUFF TO DO IN SHILLONG

  2. MOMOS: There is a place called Chilupada which is famous for the delicious momos that are served across the street. Rs.20/- per plate. Available after 3’o clock in the evening. It is closed on Sunday.
  3. VISIT AT LEAST ONE CAFÉ  (Must visit)

  1. ***** MUST VISIT*****Smoky Falls in Police Bazaar (It is right at the roundabout where the shared cabs drop you): The Brownie, Coffee and strawberry shake, you got to try it! Note: You can also buy their homemade coffee which is amazing.

About: If you are on a shoestring budget then you should go for this place. It is below Living Roof and has the same view like that of Living Roof.

DISCLAIMER: Don’t book a room in Police Bazaar as it is a very disturbing place. And, to enjoy a city like Shillong is that you should get a view of the valley. So, opt for a place which is within Shillong but away from the main bazaar.

CHERRAPUNJEE

Here just the sky and water are blue everything else is engrossed in the color green. Obviously, it ought to stand by what it is known for “ONE OF THE WETTEST PLACES IN THE WORLD”

I. NOHKALIKAI FALLS (Visit For Sure)

Nohkalikai Falls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India. Its height is 1115 feet (340 metres). The crystal clear water making its way from the dense green forest to a rock and then taking the leap onto an even land. When the water takes that leap in between the rock and even land there is where the beauty of this fall lies

II. MAWSMAI CAVE (Visit for sure)

Caves are something that one gets to pore over in the movies or those luxury magazines. We all have been to man made caves but the natural caves are a different experience altogether. The structures inside though are natural but in your head you can form images of different animals like that of animals foot or a tiger standing with his mouth wide-open ready to pounce. The caves are sticky and there is water dripping down from everywhere. It is a place which should not be given a miss.

III. DOUBLE DECKER LIVING ROOTS BRIDGE

Note: If you want to visit this bridge make sure that you keep one day just for this bridge because to reach this bridge one has to treck which takes around 6 to 8 hours.

IV. DAINTHLEN FALLS

Not many tourists go to Dainthlen Falls but they are worth a visit because of the cracks that exist on the land. It is through the caves that the water comes out in form of a fall. Again, if you love nature and its conceptions then you ought to visit this place because when you stand and look around you will feel the divinity and the peace that this place has.

DAWKI

DAWKI- THE TRANSPARENT RIVER!

The bright, shining and sparkling water which acts like a mirror giving the panorama of the river bed which consists of colourful stones and corals mingling together is what defines the city of Dawki in Meghalaya.

Distance from Shillong: 81.8 Km (2 hours 19 minutes)

Distance from Cheerapunji: 53.9 Km (1 hour 45 minutes)

HOW TO REACH DAWKI: If you want to whenever camping at Dawki then you got to take a cab all for yourself otherwise you can take a bus tour of Meghalaya Tourism / COST OF CAB- Rs 1800/- from Shillong

WHY DAWKI IS THE MOST HAPPENING PLACE- THE TRANSPARENT RIVER

Dawki is known for Umngot River which is a dream destination for every person who has come across pictures of the crystal clear blue river with bamboo. The pictures of Umngot River keep popping up all over social media platforms. You might have even come across a picture of a boat on a transparent river? That is the captivating river of Umngot which flows through the town of Dawki.

CAMPING AT DAWKI-STAYING AT DAWKI

Dawki is the main town and it is the village of Shnongpdeng, Dawki that the camping takes place.

CHARGES PER DAY FOR THE CAMP: Rs 700/- to 1000/- per day. I did camping with someone else but when I reached there, I found that the most inexpensive tents are of Mickey- +91-7005177829 or try this website seems to be inexpensive.

TIP:- Please stay at this place because the best time to enjoy this place is at 4’o clock in the morning. The silence, the water, and the mountains which form an oval-shaped boundary around the bed of the river are worth the feel.

DO THEY HAVE WASHROOMS?

Yes, there are proper washrooms. The camps are placed on the river bed. Beside the river bed is a village and there are public washrooms which are clean and tidy. They are open for the travellers 24’7.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes, it is completely safe. Most of the villagers earn their livelihood through tourists. So, they make sure that the tourists and their luggage is completely safe.

TIPS & TRICKS WITH REGARD TO MEGHALAYA

##RIGHT TIME TO VISIT MEGHALAYA- One of the main attraction point in the State of Meghalaya is the rive Umngot in Dawki. The river is known for being transparent and the insights it gives to the river bed. IF YOU AIM TO SEE THE TRANSPARENT RIVER THEN THE BEST TIME TO VISIT IS OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY. AFTER THAT THE RAINS BEGIN AND THE WATER IS NOT THAT TRANSPARENT.

##MEGHALAYA AS A STATE IS COMPLETELY SAFE FOR A SOLO WOMAN TRAVELLER: ***** 5 stars to the safety of the state. Plan a solo trip to this place and you won’t regret it ever.

##EXPENSE: 25,000 per person if you are travelling solo otherwise if more people are traveling together the trip expenditure is going to reduce per person- It can be reduced if you take one day tours by Meghalaya Tourism (Remember, the cab drivers would tell you that the Meghalaya Tourism buses don’t function anymore but that’s the biggest lie all the taxi drivers tell)

##CLOTHES TO CARRY: Do a carry a jacket because in the city of Shillong, it can rain at any point of time even in summers and it tends to get cold. In summers otherwise, carry all kind of stylish clothes.

##NUMBER OF DAYS: 5 to 7 days are required.

##TYPE OF PLACE: Mountains covered with pine-oak trees. A place which is not at all crowded and wherein you can find immense peace.
