Travel Guide For Chennai & Mahabalipuram (Itinerary included)
Chennai is a coastal city, so the beach runs around the city and you can visit the Marina Beach which is one of the most famous beaches of Chennai. You should include Chennai in your list while traveling to Pondicherry especially if you LOVE SILK CLOTHES
HOW TO INCLUDE CHENNAI IN THE TRIP?
Take a flight till Chennai and then rent a self-driven car till Pondicherry.
ANOTHER TIP: Include Mahabalipuram in your trip because:-
- The road trip from Chennai to Pondicherry via Mahabalipuram is mesmerizing
- There are places which are worth visiting in Mahabalipuram
NOTE- There is a direct road from Chennai Airport to Pondicherry if you are taking that road Mahabalipuram won’t come on your way. If you want to reach Pondicherry in three hours take the direct road because the one via Mahabalipuram takes 5 to 6 hours to reach Pondy because of the traffic.

MAHABALIPURAM- PLACES TO VISIT
On the way from Chennai to Pondicherry via Mahabalipuram
- Boat House, Muttukadu
- Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, Center of Herpetology
I loved this place because I love animals and watching crocodiles was all the more fun and amazing. Yes, they are so very lazy that you will take them as if they are sculptures but the move once in a while to prove all your assumptions wrong.
This place is well known for its monuments and they are:-
- Krishna’s Butter Ball– It is a famous rock which opposes the concept of gravity. So, do go and stand underneath and say hi to the whole world.
- Arjuna’s Penance: Ancient sculptured wall and a monument. The sculptures of this place are something which you should watch for sure.
- Pancha Rathas
- Sea Shore Temple: A temple on the side os the sea shore as the name says it all, do watch the sunrise or sunset from this place, it is a must watch.
The City of Chennai is known for its Kanjivaram Silk Sarees and cotton suits. If you are a great fan of fashion and you want something which stays in your wardrobe forever then you should not give this one a miss. The best place to buy these things is Nageswaran Road, T.Nagar market. The two best shops that you should visit are:-
- Kumaran Silks
This is one of the best shops as it is divided into four floors, each flour has different types of clothes like Kanjivaram, cotton, etc. These floors are further divided into sections in accordance to the designs and the prices. The best thing about this shop is the way they attend their customers. If you really want to buy Kanjivaram sarees and you have very little knowledge about it then you should surely visit this shop.
Address- 12 Nageswaran Road,
This is one of those shops which is like a famous brand in the city as it has its outlets all over India. One can visit this shop but I think this shop has high prices as they have a brand name all around India.
Address- No,9 Nageswaran Road, T.Nagar,
Chennai – 600 017
Note- The best thing about these shops is that they are next to each other.
Places to eat good food
The best thing about this place is the street food. Give it a try, the Idli, sambar, and dosa, they are so very yummy. If you want to visit a Restaurant then you can either go to Sangeets’s or Sarawana Bhawan (This Bhawan has the yummiest south Indian food that I have ever had.)
About the people
Personally, I was not very happy with the people of this state because most of them are not happy to have you and also they do treat you as outsiders and are unfair because you are not a south Indian or you are a foreigner to their state.
Bargain- Oh! Yes, you got to keep your bargaining skills up especially when you are hiring a cab or a rickshaw. They will drop from Rs 250 to Rs 100, yes, you got to bargain buddy to the level you cannot even imagine. P.S. I will suggest that you book a cab from Ola or Uber instead of waving your hand at a local cabbie and bargaining.
